에스페란자 스폴딩 (Esperanza Spalding), 재즈계 최초 그래미 신인상 수상 外 2011년 제53회 그래미 재즈부문 소식

2월 13일 로스앤젤레스에서 열린 제53회 그래미 시상식에서 재즈 베이스주자이자 가수인 에스페란자 스폴딩(Esperanza Spalding)이 순수 재즈 아티스트로는 최초로 그래미 신인상(Best New Artist)을 수상했다. 그래미 공식 홈페이지에도 그래미 신인상을 받는 최초의 순수 재즈 아티스트(first pure jazz artist)라고 소개되어 있다. 콩코드(Concord) 레코드의 재즈/클래식 그룹의 수석 부회장이자 레이블 매니저인 마크 웩슬러(Mark Wexler)는 "에스페란자는 경이적인 아티스트입니다. 그녀의 그래미 신인상 수상에 우리는 너무 짜릿합니다. 콩코드 뮤직 그룹의 우리 모두는 에스페란자가 음악산업계로부터 인정받았다는 사실에 기쁘고 그녀의 성공과 함께 할 수 있어 자랑스럽습니다."라고 말했다. 스폴딩은 수상 소감에서 어스 파이브(Us Five)라는 앙상블에서 함께 했던 색소폰 주자 조 로바노(Joe Lovano)를 언급하기도 했다. 어스 파이브는 2010년 다운비트 평론가 선정 베스트 재즈 그룹으로 선정된 바 있다.

스폴딩 외에도 키보디스트 허비 행콕(Herbie Hancock)이 그의 The Imagine Project 앨범 중 존 레논(John Lennon)의 "Imagine"을 재해석한 것으로 핑크(Pink), 인디아 아리에(India.Arie), 씰(Seal), 코노노 넘버 원(Konono No 1), 제프 벡(Jeff Beck) 그리고 오우모우 상가르(Oumou Sangare) 등과 함께 Best Pop Collaboration with vocals 부문에서 수상했다. 허비 행콕은 같은 앨범에서 샘 쿡(Sam Cooke)의 원곡인 “A Change Is Gonna Come”으로 Best Improvised Jazz Solo 부문을 수상해 2관왕에 올랐다.

스탠리 클락(Stanley Clarke Band)의 동명 타이틀앨범은 Best Contemporary Jazz Album부문을 디 디 브릿지워터(Dee Dee Bridgewater)는 "Eleanor Fagan (1915–1959): To Billie With Love From Dee Dee)"으로 Best Jazz Vocal Album 부분을 수상했다. 색소폰주자 제임스 무디(James Moody)는 "Moody 4B"로 Best Jazz Instrumental Album, Individual or Group 부문을 수상했다.
