NPR이 선정한 역대 최고 재즈 100곡

미국의 공공 라디오 스테이션인 National Public Radio(NPR)이 청취자들이 뽑은 역대 최고의 재즈 명곡 100곡을 발표했다. 1세기를 넘긴 재즈의 역사 속에서 단 100곡만을 추려 순위를 매기는 일 자체가 무모한 일인지도 모르겠다. 실제로 이 순위가 발표된 NPR의 웹사이트에는 여러가지 논쟁들이 오고가고 있다. 특히 이 순위의 타이틀을 '재즈 베스트 100'가 아니라 '하드밥, 스윙 베스트100'으로 바꾸어야 한다며 주로 하드밥과 스윙 넘버들이 선정된 문제점 지적하는 의견도 있었다. 어떤 사람은 31위에 선정된 루이 암스트롱(Louis Armstrong)의 'What a Wonderful World'가 엄밀히 말해 재즈라고 하기 어렵다는 의견을 올렸는데, 그에 동의한다는 답글들이 달렸다. 개인적으로는 데이브 브루벡(Dave Brubeck)의 'Take Five'가 1위를 차지한 것이 의외였고 전체적으로 편향되어 있다는 의견에 동의한다. 팻 메시니(Pat Metheny)의 'Are You Going With Me?' 정도는 100위안에 있어냐 하는 것 아닌가하는 생각이 들고 컨템포러리 재즈 아티스트들의 곡이 전혀 순위에 없어 아쉬운 감이 있다. 하지만, 선정된 곡들 모두 훌륭한 넘버들이며 다만 빠져 있는 곡들에 대한 약간의 아쉬움이 있을 뿐이다.
